Fun Facts About

American Cockroaches

Despite their name, American cockroaches originated from Africa and were introduced to the U.S. via cargo ships.

They can survive up to a month without food but not more than a week without water.

These roaches are capable of speeds up to 3.4 miles per hour.

Lifecycle and Behavior

The lifecycle of an American cockroach encompasses egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females encase their eggs in a protective shell known as an ootheca, containing up to 16 eggs that hatch in 6 to 8 weeks. Nymphs undergo several molts, transitioning from light brown or tan with darker stripes to fully developed adults. These roaches are scavengers, favoring food scraps, decaying matter, and other moist, dark environments like sewers or drains.

Preferred Indoor Habitats

American cockroaches gravitate toward areas providing moisture and food, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. They’re also common in commercial spaces like restaurants and hospitals.

Dietary Preferences

Omnivorous in nature, American cockroaches have a fondness for starchy, sweet, and greasy foods, as well as meat.

Indicators of Infestation

The presence of American cockroaches is often betrayed by sightings during nocturnal activities, droppings resembling coffee grounds, greasy wall stains, and shed skins from molting.

Health and Safety Concerns

American cockroaches pose significant health risks, carrying viruses, bacteria, and parasites. They are linked to diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, and salmonella. Some individuals may also suffer from allergies triggered by these pests.
